You can re-customize your avatar and profile picture without limit, using the button on the Service Station window while in the captain's quarters. If you have the station environment enabled you can access this using the mirror on the wall as well. You can adjust the frame on the profile picture by right clicking and dragging, this was not something I found the first time when I created my avatar.
