Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space. - Douglas Adams

Jump Clones, Get Yours Today!

Like many aspects of EVE Online, jump clones have their share of mystery and confusion. It is helpful to understand that there are three types of clones in EVE: your current clone, a medical clone, and jump clones.

You are always in your current clone. Whenever you activate a medical clone or jump clone, that clone immediately becomes your current clone. You can only ever have one current clone for obvious reasons. It just wouldn't be proper to have multiples of yourself running around getting into all sorts of trouble.

When you die in EVE you wake up in your medical clone, which immediately becomes your current clone. You always have one and only one medical clone. Your medical clone can be upgraded to store a certain amount of skill points. You can also transfer your medical clone between eligible facilities, starting NPC corporation offices and your player corporation offices. The only way to activate your medical clone is by dying, either being podded or by self destructing.

A jump clone is a clone that you can activate from the character sheet - jump clone tab, once every 24 hours. You must be docked at a station without a jump clone in order to activate a jump clone. When you activate a jump clone your current clone is left were it is, becoming a jump clone itself, and you wake up in the location of the jump clone you activated. In this way jump clones are used to "jump" around the universe. This method of traversing the world is only part of the benefit of jump clones. Important reminder, upon waking up in your jump clone you will need to resume your training queue.

Activating jump clones leaves your current clone with whatever implants it had installed. In this fashion your implants are preserved allowing you to have jump clones with unique sets of implants or none at all. You might have a jump clone with all +5 implants reserved for long stretches of skill training or another with implants tailored to pvp or even more specific jobs. It is important to remember that when you activate a jump clone it becomes your current clone. Therefore, if you die in your current clone, all implants are lost and you wake up in your medical clone.

Jump clones cost 100,000 ISK and require the skill Infomorph Psychology. This skill provides one clone per level for a total of five. Installing a jump clone requires you to travel to the station you wish to install the clone into. Jump clones require a standing of +8 with the NPC corporation in control of the medical bay where you wish to install a jump clone. This +8 standing requirement is rendered moot for players who are free to join the Estel Arador Corp Services corporation. EACS has jump clone-grade standings with 49 NPC corporations and gives access to 1092 jump clone facilities all over the universe at no extra charge. After joining EACS you have four days to install your jump clones and leave the corporation.

Because of the tremendous free service that EACS provides, even new players have no excuse not to utilize jump clones. Hopefully this guide clarifies some of the mystery and confusion surrounding these incredibly useful tools.
